The economy is good and e-commerce is booming. The steady growth in e-commerce and all the challenges it brings around piece picking, labor management, and cycles times, is driving significant change. The need for more speed and accuracy is setting new expectations and forcing adjustments to e-commerce warehouse and fulfillment operations.

The level of e-commerce involvement is driving change in many areas. Some of the major modifications e-commerce is making are:

  • More investments in automated order picking
  • Voice-directed systems and other technology
  • The challenge to find qualified workers
  • Reshaping DC networks – smaller facilities to serve as fulfillment centers closer to the point of demand
